Australian Federal Police Pipes and Drums

The Australian Federal Police Pipes and Drums (AFPPD) is a volunteer group of musicians drawn from the membership of the Canberra City Pipes and Drums (CCPD), who for more than a decade has performed at a wide range of public and ceremonial events in support of the AFP.

CCPD was first appointed as the honorary pipe and drum band to the AFP in 1993, before the appointment was formalised in 2002 with the signing of a service agreement between the Commonwealth of Australia and the CCPD.

In recognition of that appointment, the CCPD adopted the wearing of black and white hackles and black and white dicing on glengarries. The AFP logo and chequered dicing is also displayed on all drums.

The AFPPD is central to many AFP ceremonial events, from the provision of a solo piper for funerals and investitures, through to full band performances at ceremonies including National Police Remembrance Day.

2011 performance schedule

As well as performing for national audiences at the 2006 and 2008 Adelaide International Police Tattoos, the band has entertained audiences around the globe with performances at the inaugural Kremlin Zoria which took place in 2007 in Moscow's Red Square and most recently the band performed at the Basel Tattoo in Switzerland in July 2010.

After appearances with other local pipe and drum bands at Andre Rieu concerts in Sydney and Melbourne in 2008, the AFPPD had its first appearance at the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo in August 2009 and a follow on appearance at the Edinburgh Military Tattoo in Sydney in February 2010.

The AFPPD has recently been invited to travel to Scotland in 2012 to perform at the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, which will celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.
