Mr Gunning is the Chief Financial Officer and National Manager to the Finance and Commercial portfolio in the AFP.

Previously, Mr Gunning was the Chief Finance Officer in the Australian Trade Commission (Austrade). Before his seven years at Austrade, Mr Gunning worked in the private sector providing specialist financial and other business and consultancy services to agencies such as the Australian Taxation Office, Medibank Private, the Australian National Audit Office and ACTEWAGL. Earlier he worked closely with agencies in the cultural sector and was also involved in developing sustainable funding models for the National Gallery of Australia, the National Museum of Australia and Questacon as the government moved to an accrual budgeting environment. He is an Accountant by profession and is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia.

Mr Gunning was born in Canberra and has spent most of his career working in Canberra and spent two years abroad working in the UK for the accounting firm Coopers and Lybrand. He is an active member of the Canberra sporting community both as a participant and in coaching and administering junior sport.
