ACT Government Awards

Eligible AFP employees may be recognised by the ACT Government. Awards include:

ACT Community Policing Medal

The ACT Government established the ACT Community Policing Medal to recognise sworn ACT Policing members for 10 years cumulative and diligent service from 6 December 1988.

Application process

The awarding of the ACT Community Policing Medal is application based. Members must complete an application form and submit to ACT People Strategies for processing.

What does the recipient receive?

  • A medal engraved with the recipients name for wearing at ceremonial occasions
  • A miniature of the medal for wearing at mess functions and other formal dining occasions
  • A riband for wearing on AFP uniform

The 20 Year Clasp

As of 6 December 2008, a clasp to denote 20 years cumulative and diligent service is awarded to eligible members. The awarding of the clasp is application based, with applications available from AFP Forms.

How the Medal and/or Clasp is Presented

The Chief Police Officer ACT presents the award to recipients. The Commissioner, Deputy Commissioners, Chief Operating Officer, National Managers and Office Managers may also present this award.

Administration of Awards

The award is administrated by ACT Policing People Strategies with the assistance of Recognition & Ceremonial.

ACT Community Protection Medal

The ACT Government established the ACT Community Protection Medal to recognise sustained diligent or outstanding service. The ACT Government awards a maximum of five awards each year on Canberra Day, one award is issued to each of the emergency response agencies of the ACT.

Who is eligible for the award?

Any person who is either an employee or volunteer of the following agencies:

  • ACT Ambulance Service
  • ACT Fire Brigade
  • ACT Rural Fire Service
  • ACT State Emergency Service
  • ACT Police

What is the nomination process?

An eligible member may be nominated by another member using the nomination form. The nomination must be forwarded to the ACT Chief Police Officer.

What does the recipient receive?

  • A medal for the wearing at ceremonial occasions
  • A miniature of the medal for wearing at mess functions and other formal dining occasions
  • A riband for wearing on AFP Uniform
  • A lapel pin
  • A certificate outlining the circumstances for the recognition

How the Medal is Presented

The medal is presented by the ACT Minister for Police and Emergency Services.

Administration of Awards

The awards is administered by ACT Policing People Strategies

ACT Emergency Medal

In 2004, the ACT Government established the ACT Emergency Medal to recognise ‘Courage, Leadership, Teamwork, Professionalism, Innovation, Integrity' during emergencies.

The Government may award the medal to registered or sworn members of a uniformed emergency response agency located in the ACT.

  • A medal for the wearing at ceremonial occasions
  • A miniature of the medal for wearing at mess functions and other formal dining occasions
  • A riband for wearing on AFP Uniform
