Lead-Up Events
Ita Buttrose to MC the National Police Memorial Dedication
On 22 March 2006, well-known media personality Ita Buttrose visited the AFP after being invited to MC the Dedication of the National Police Memorial.
Experienced in the field after performing a similar role for the National Service Nurses Memorial on ANZAC Parade, Ita was delighted to be asked, and accepted the honour with visible enthusiasm.
She visited AFP HQ in Canberra for a briefing on plans thus far and to tour the actual site on the shores of Lake Burley-Griffin.
Ms Buttrose has family connections with policing and thus felt a very strong affinity with the task ahead of her. She has a brother currently wearing uniform and is a direct descendant of one of the first state troopers posted to South Australia.
The ground breaking of the National Police Memorial
In February 2006, the Governor General dug the first sod at a ceremonial ground breaking of the National Police Memorial at Kings Park in Canberra. AFP Commissioner Mick Keelty was in attendance at the ceremony, as were key AFP staff and government dignitaries.
The design of the National Police Memorial
In June 2005, AFP Commissioner Mick Keelty announced the winning design for the National Police Memorial. Senator Chris Ellison, the Minister for Justice and Customs presented a letter of congratulations to the winning designers.
The competition attracted 77 entries, and the selection panel was unanimous in their selection of the winning design by Brisbane based company, Fairweather Proberts Architects. The memorial will feature a main wall clad in cast bronze panels and granite floor with inlaid text, complemented by a low profile wall and semi-enclosed seating area.
