Traditions
The Recognition & Ceremonial Team is the guardian of the AFP's customs and traditions, protocols and symbols. Many of these symbols represent our instruments of rank and authority, and distinctly identify members of the AFP from those of other police services.
These emblems and icons fall into two significant categories. The first of these is synonymous with police in general and includes:
- the Badge
- the Police Flag
- the shoulder patch
- rank insignia, and
- the chequered band (also known as the ‘Sillitoe Tartan’).
More specifically to the AFP is the faunal emblem, the Platypus.
