Community engagement helps fight petrol drive-offs - 19 August 2008
Police officers have various roles and responsibilities within the Canberra community. One of these roles is crime prevention and informing the community on how they can help the fight against crime.
Over the past three weeks our Volunteers In Policing have been conducting surveys with more than 50 ACT service stations to identify issues involved with petrol drive-offs. The survey included questions relating to current security measures, payment methods being used by service stations and the frequency at which they are becoming victims of petrol drive-offs and other criminal offences.
The vast majority of the people surveyed were eager to meet with police to discuss theft reduction strategies specific to service stations. Data gathered from the surveys will be used to help formulate stronger business security measures.
Some of my officers from the ACT Policing Beats Team have also held a meeting with licensees and security staff from various pubs and clubs in and around Civic to discuss their Liquor Act obligations and recommendations to ensure a smooth working relationship when incidents need police intervention.
If you or your organisation would like police to talk with a local community group on law enforcement issues you can contact our Crime Prevention team via email at community-liaision-requests@afp.gov.au or by calling 6256 7777 and asking to speak with Crime Prevention.
