Paying ACT traffic fines
This page relates to traffic infringements issued for speeding, unregistered vehicles, negligent driving and other traffic related offences occuring in the Australian Capital Territory. For traffic infringements in another Australian state or territory please contact the relevant police or road authority.
Please note: Traffic infringements do not include ACT parking fines.
Payment options
If you have been issued with a traffic infringement, you have 28 days from the date of service to:
- Pay your traffic fine
- Request more time to pay
- Dispute the notice
- Request an extension of time to dispute
- Apply for withdrawal of the notice

Penalty amounts for traffic infringement notices are determined by the ACT Government. See the full list of infringement penalty amounts (ACT Government) (PDF, 97kb).
If you fail to pay the infringement notice penalty within 28 days from the date of service, a reminder notice will be served on you. An additional administration fee of $34.00 is charged by the ACT Government for the cost of serving the reminder notice.
Pay your traffic fine
Payment must be made within 28 days from the date of service of the infringement notice or the reminder notice.
Payment methods
- Online: Payments can be made online via the ACT Government's rego.act website
- In person: Pay at any Post Office/ Post Office agency or Canberra Connect Shopfront using cash, cheque or debit cards (EFTPOS)
- By post: Make cheques or money orders payable to 'Road Transport Authority'. Please attach the notice with your payment and send to: PO Box 582 Dickson ACT 2602
- Bpay: Bpay Biller code 343533, Customer Number is the ten digit infringement number. Contact your financial institution to make payment
- Over the phone: Phone 131816 (When prompted, enter the Billpay code, 0286)
All non-cash payments are subject to 5 working days clearance.
Request more time to pay
You may apply for an extension to pay the infringement notice penalty, or to dispute the liability, within 28 days from the date of service of either the infringement notice or the reminder notice.
The request must contain the following details:
- traffic infringement number/s;
- date of service of the infringement notice/s;
- your name, current address, drivers license number and state;
- a work and/or home contact phone number;
- the length of extension required (the maximum time allowed is six months); and
- a brief reason why you are requesting an extension of time to pay.
Request options
- Online: Submit your request online using the Request extension of time to pay online form
- In person: Attend any ACT Police station and complete a request for extension form that will be forwarded for processing
- By fax: Print the Request extension of time to pay form (PDF, 35 Kb), complete the details and fax to the number shown on the form.

In due course, you will receive a reply in writing, advising the outcome of your extension request.
Dispute the notice
If you have been served with a Traffic Infringement Notice or a Reminder Notice, you maylodge a notice to dispute liability within 28 days after the Date of Service.
Note: ACT Road Transport legislation only allows the person who has been served with an infringement to dispute liability. If the dispute clearly contradicts the Police evidence the matter will be referred to the Magistrates Court.
The request must state that you have chosen to dispute liability and must include the following details:
- traffic infringement number/s;
- date of service of infringement notice/s;
- your name, current address, drivers license number and state; and
- a work and/or home contact phone number
- grounds on which you dispute the notice.

Dispute process
Motorists should be aware that following a decision in the ACT Supreme Court in 2005 if the content of their correspondence (sent to the Chief Police Officer) indicates that they:
- do not agree with, or object to the imposition of, the infringement notice;
- deny that they have committed the offence;
- are calling into question the operation/accuracy of the speed/red light camera;
- are calling into question the evidence for issuing the infringement notice;
- are appealing or contesting the infringement notice; or
- are disputing the infringement notice;
the matter will be referred to Court for determination even if the correspondence is headed " Application for Withdrawal"
If the Court finds against you, you may be convicted and ordered to pay a penalty and additional Court costs.
Request time to dispute liability
If you have been served with a Traffic Infringement Notice or a Reminder Notice, you may apply for an extension of time to dispute liability for the traffic offence within 28 days from the 'Date of Service' on the Notice or Reminder.
The request must contain the following details:
- traffic infringement number/s;
- date of service of the infringement notice/s;
- your name, current mailing address, drivers license number and state; and
- a work and/or home contact phone number
- length of extension required (maximum extension is 28 days)

If you have been served with a Traffic Infringement Notice or a Reminder Notice, you may lodge an application for withdrawal of the notice within 28 days after the Date of Service

The request must state that you request a withdrawal and set out the grounds on which you rely, including the following details:
- traffic infringement number/s;
- date of service of infringement notice/s;
- your name, current address, drivers license number and state; and
- a work and/or home contact phone number
- reasons why you request a withdrawal of the notice.

Application for withdrawal process
Complaints about Traffic Infringements
Complaints in relation to Traffic Infringement Notices may be taken by any member of the AFP (N.B. if the complaint merely disputes the facts of the traffic infringement notice it is not considered as a complaint)
Complaints concerning the conduct, demeanour or behaviour of the issuing officer are directed to the Complaints Management Team.
Conciliation of the complaint is carried out separately and in isolation to any written application (submitted to the Chief Police Officer) applying for the withdrawal of, or the dispute of a traffic infringement notice.
Persons applying for the withdrawal of, or the dispute of traffic infringement notices should be aware that these may be referred to the Canberra Magistrates Court for determination.
