Pre-Deployment Training

Since 1999 the AFP has conducted pre-deployment training for members serving off shore in peacekeeping missions. The course built a strong reputation as program of excellence.

On 22 March 2007, after a review of current training processes and requirements, the IDG implemented a new, more topical international training course, called ‘Pre-deployment Training’ (PDT). The training team is known as the Pre-deployment Training Team (PDTT). The substantial new program helps establish the new culture required to make the course effective for participants.

All police and staff members undertaking overseas duties under the International Deployment Group receive compulsory training from the Pre-International Deployment Training Team.

The PDT is 35 days duration. Ten days are occupied with use of force qualification or re-qualification if required. The rest of the program is concerned with providing participants with the skills to live and work in a foreign environment. Conceptually, the program is made up of two broad pillars or themes and they are: Capacity Development and Safety.

The live-in program challenges our participants to adopt a coaching approach to capacity development. This coaching approach is delivered within a setting of cultural appropriateness, values and human rights. The course also covers a wide range of issues related to the work and living conditions that one might find in a mission such as first aid, command and control, four wheel driving, navigation and remote area living.

The current program is divided into three phases. The first phase is the Operational Safety and Administration Phase. The second phase is the Formal Instruction Phase where participants are exposed to all the potential issues in a classroom environment. The third phase is the Scenario Phase where participants are encouraged to put their learning into action during a simulated mission experience. The PDT now has more focus on assessment and performance feedback.

The PDT is conducted in and around Canberra in the ACT. The IDG training regime has been reviewed and changes to this program will be ongoing in accordance with changing mission requirements.

All members deploying to an IDG mission are required to attend the PDT. A typical class may include AFP members both sworn and unsworn, Australian State Police Officers and members of Pacific Island Nations Police Services. This mix of participants mirrors the diversity of IDG missions and provides many perspectives for participants to consider.
