Media Release: Two men arrested and 14.3 kilograms of methamphetamine seized overnight

Release Date: Thursday, April 21 2011, 03:41 PM

This is a joint media release with WA Police.

Two men have been arrested in Perth and Sydney overnight following a multi-jurisdictional investigation involving the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and Western Australia Police.

In Perth, WA Police and the AFP executed a search warrant at a residential premises in Scarborough seizing 14.3 kilograms of methamphetamine and arresting a 41-year-old Dutch male.

In Sydney, the AFP executed search warrants on five residential premises and two vehicles in the eastern suburbs seizing $26,000 cash and arresting a 42-year-old Belgian male.

As part of the same investigation on 17 March 2011, the AFP arrested two males in Sydney seizing 50 kilograms of methamphetamine.  Those males are currently before the Court facing charges related to trafficking a commercial quantity of a controlled drug, contrary to section 302.2 (1) of the Criminal Code Act 1995.

AFP Acting Superintendent Scott Girling said the joint investigation between the AFP and WA Police in Perth was a significant result for law enforcement in Western Australia.

“The AFP has worked closely with WA Police, and the Australian Crime Commission from the outset in relation to this operation, which has resulted in a significant disruption to organised crime and the supply and distribution of illicit drugs in WA,” Acting Superintendent Girling said.

WA Police Specialist Crime Assistant Commissioner Nick Anticich said this is an example of another attempt by serious organised crime to impact on the community of Western Australia.

“It is another example of an exponential growth in organised crime that is being attracted to our state from overseas and nationally,” Mr Anticich said.

“The size of this seizure and the amount of harm it would have caused cannot be understated.

“We are pleased to have worked closely with our national law enforcement partners to bring this to a successful conclusion.”

The 41-year-old man will appear in Perth Magistrates Court today, charged with possessing a commercial quantity of a border controlled drug, namely methamphetamine, contrary to section 307.8(1) of the Criminal Code Act 1995.

The 42-year-old man will appear in Sydney Central Local Court today, charged with trafficking a commercial quantity of a border controlled drug, namely methamphetamine, contrary to section 302.2 of the Criminal Code Act 1995.

The maximum penalty for these offences is life imprisonment and/or a $825,000 fine.
