Release Date: Tuesday, August 28 2012, 09:58 AM
The Australian Federal Police (AFP) will host a number of dinners this week to celebrate Eid ul-Fitr and the end of the holy month of Ramadan, as part of the AFP’s commitment in engaging with the Islamic community.
The AFP will host a dinner in Melbourne today (28 August) and another in Sydney on Thursday (30 August), which will be attended by leaders of local Islamic communities and mosques and representatives from other government and non-government agencies.
Deputy Commissioner of National Security Peter Drennan said this event is an example of the AFP’s ongoing commitment to improve its relationship with the Islamic community.
“The AFP has dedicated Community Liaison Teams in Sydney and Melbourne which regularly engage with multicultural community groups to strengthen and develop relationships,” Deputy Commissioner Drennan said.
“The teams help to build positive and trusting relationships between law enforcement and the community, which helps to build understanding, tolerance and community harmony.”
The AFP has hosted annual Ramadan events for the last six years.
