Media Release: AFP finalises referral from Senator Brandis into Australia Day protest

The AFP can confirm that it has finalised its evaluation into a referral received on 30 January 2012 from Senator George Brandis in relation to circumstances surrounding the Australia Day protest in Canberra.

The referral related to how protestors were alerted to the presence of the Prime Minister and Opposition Leader at the Lobby Restaurant in Canberra on 26 January 2012 and whether any offences may have occurred in the process.

The AFP has fully evaluated this matter and has assessed that the available evidence does not support the existence of any criminal offences.

An investigation into the alleged public order offences by protestors on Australia Day remains ongoing.
