Media Release: The AFP, the Morcombe family and Big Red unite to promote child safety in Canberra

Release Date: Tuesday, October 30 2012, 07:47 AM

The AFP and Denise and Bruce Morcombe are joining forces today to raise awareness about child safety in the Canberra region, following the annual Day for Daniel event on October 26.

Day for Daniel encourages Australians to wear red to highlight the importance of protecting children. The annual event was founded in remembrance of Daniel Morcombe, who was abducted from the Keil Mountain Road overpass in Queensland in December 2003, and was last seen wearing red clothing.

This year’s event has special significance in the Canberra region, with the Morcombe’s lending their new educational vehicle, known affectionately as ‘Big Red’, to the ACT community for two weeks.

‘Big Red’ has been visiting schools in Queensland since July 2012 and has so far visited thousands of children. The Morcombe family hopes that the truck will eventually visit all Australian school kids, spreading its message of child safety awareness across the nation.

The journey to the ACT marks the truck’s first trip outside of its home state, with a number of Canberra events scheduled.

The AFP, through the National Missing Persons Coordination Centre within High Tech Crime Operations, has been working with the Daniel Morcombe Foundation for the past six years. In 2011, the AFP raised $4,000 for the foundation and are hoping to raise even more this year.

“The AFP is delighted to be associated with the Morcombe foundation, and shares its commitment to keeping children safe from harm,” Acting Commissioner Peter Drennan said.

“Kenny Koala will join forces with ‘Big Red’ at a number of community events in Canberra, to help protect the safety of our children and to prevent them from going missing child or becoming an innocent victim of crime.”

The Daniel Morcombe Foundation was established in 2005 to raise awareness of child safety. For more information visit
