Chief Minister's Message Re: Opening of new Woden Police Station

Chief Minister - Jon Stanhope

Strong communities are built on firm foundations. Respect for each other, and for the law, is at the heart of what brings us together and keeps us safe.

The new police station at Woden is state-of-the-art. This $8.2 million facility will make a big contribution to community safety in Canberra.

But it's more than a building. Up to 120 people will work in this new police station, and countless Canberrans will walk through its doors seeking advice, help or refuge. Many more will be offering feedback or information.

We all know how important these exchanges are to our community.

The Government has long recognised that to do their job well, our police need the best possible facilities. Anyone familiar with the old police station would agree that it was time to rebuild. I'd like to thank the officers and staff at Woden for their patience during the transition.

Canberra is one of Australia's safest cities. This world-class station, along with the extra front-line patrols provided in the last Budget, will help our police build on that record, and make us even safer.

As Woden police settle in to their new station, we are investigating the possibilities for Belconnen. We hope, once our feasibility study is complete, to be able to move forward with a new Belconnen police station.

I look forward to seeing Woden's new police station being put to good use for many years to come.
