Demonstration at Myanmar Embassy

On 9 May 2008 ACT Policing provided 30 police officers to ensure the peace was maintained at a demonstration outside the Myanmar (Burma) Embassy in Canberra.

A 37-year-old female from Melbourne was arrested when she threw a water bottle at a vehicle entering the Myanmar Embassy at about 12.20pm. The female was cautioned by police and released from custody later in the day.

Several people attempted to hinder police in the course of arresting the female from within the crowed of approximately 100 protestors.

Two males from Melbourne, aged 38 and 43, were also taken into police custody and entered into undertakings to keep the peace before being released.

The demonstration came amid restrictions on foreign aid workers into Myanmar in the wake of Cyclone Nargis (May 3), which it is feared has killed 100,000 people.
