Plans for new Belconnen Police Station unveiled
ACT Policing and the ACT Government have revealed the proposed plans for the new state-of-the-art Belconnen Police Station.
The ACT government has committed more than $17 million over the next four years to design and construct the new facility.
Acting Chief Police Officer Leanne Close and the Minister for Police and Emergency Services, Simon Corbell attended the proposed site on the corner of Benjamin Way and Market Street in Belconnen for the unveiling of the proposed plans.
The plans marks the second stage of the replacement of the outdated Belconnen Police Station located on Lathlain Street and its allied facility the Belconnen Remand Centre.
The new station will be situated on vacant land alongside the Winchester Police Headquarters and will provide a working space for around 100 sworn and unsworn members. It will house a public access foyer and counter; holding cells and incident rooms; a welfare counselling and victims of crime room; a muster room; a breath analysis area; and secure and visitor car parks.
Acting Chief Police Officer Close says ACT Policing has given the plans careful consultation.
“ACT Policing has been working closely with the ACT government to come up with the plans for the new station,” she said.
“The plans reflect what the community needs and have taken into consideration the issues encountered over the past 35 years at the current Belconnen station.”
The new Belconnen Police Station is scheduled to open in 2010.
