ACT Policing media release
Building site security
Thursday, 02 October 2003
ACT Policing is seeking community assistance to prevent the burglary of goods from building sites.
Anyone living in a residential area with nearby building sites is urged to contact police if they witness any suspicious vehicles or behaviour. They should take note of the vehicle’s make and registration number or provide an accurate description of the person’s appearance to police.
Acting Chief Police Officer Mandy Newton said this could include utes repeatedly driving around the area or people appearing to be builders working on the site at night.
“Police can’t investigate a suspicious incident if it is not reported to them,” A/CPO Newton said today.
Police encourage people not to install expensive items in a building site until it is at the lock-up stage.
“It is obviously easier to install items into a building site before the walls and doorways have been built, however this leaves the items vulnerable to theft,” A/CPO Newton said.
ACT Policing patrols are paying attention to building sites within residential suburbs and working with Neighbourhood Watch to minimise burglary in these areas.
Anyone who witnesses suspicious activity should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
