ACT Policing media release
Police pursuit on road, and foot
Monday, 22 September 2003
A police pursuit which reached speeds of 160km/h over the weekend ended safely with a 21-year-old man now in custody and ACT Policing officers laying charges for a number of serious driving offences.
Shortly before 4am on Saturday (September 20), Traffic Operations police intercepted a reportedly stolen motor vehicle headed south along the Federal Highway from Goulburn, just inside the Territory border. The vehicle and its driver were stopped near the Majura Road turn-off, but as police approached the car to speak with the driver, he allegedly accelerated away, and the pursuit began.
Police from North District joined Traffic Operations as the vehicle was followed along the Federal Highway, allegedly reaching speeds of 160km/h until it turned left into Antill Street continuing at speeds of to 130km/h. The vehicle then rejoined the Federal Highway where it turned right, driving on the incorrect side of the road.
Police remained behind the suspect vehicle while a second police vehicle proceeded on the correct side of the road in front of the vehicle to warn any oncoming traffic. The pursuit continued north to about the same point from which it began, just outside the Territory border. The vehicle turned into a service road where it hit a traffic island and flattened its front tyres.
The driver then allegedly fled on foot but was chased down by police, and apprehended.
NSW Police from Goulburn arrived on the scene and took custody of the 21-year-old male. He was wanted in both Goulburn and Sydney for numerous offences. ACT Policing has charged the driver with driving dangerously, driving while unlicenced, and being in possession of stolen property.
