International youths on police tour visit Canberra

Thursday, 24 July 2008

ACT Policing will this week host 48 teenagers aged between 15 and 17 years as the group visits the East Coast of Australia on an International Police Association-supported tour.

The visitors are from as far afield as Finland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Romania and the US. They are on a 14-day program, and most arrived in Melbourne for their Victorian leg earlier this week.

Most are sons and daughters of serving and/or retired police officers overseas who are brought to Australia through the auspices of the IPA, an international alliance between police associations with around 375,000 members across 62 countries.

As a patron of the IPA (ACT region), ACT Chief Police Officer Mike Phelan will officially welcome the group to Canberra on Saturday, July 26.

While on their brief visit to Canberra, the youth contingent will be taken on a tour of SRS Water Operations and visit the National Police Memorial, as well as take in some of Canberra’s other major attractions.

The visitors will leave Canberra on Saturday for a tour of the NSW Police Academy in Goulburn and after visiting Sydney, will then head to Queensland.
