Police seek witnesses to school damage
Saturday, 28 June 2008
ACT Policing is investigating the burglary of a Belconnen school overnight (June 26 / June 27), which left a number of windows damaged.
Police attended Belconnen High School in Murranji Street, Hawker shortly after 3am today and found at least 20 windows had been broken. Police believe that property was also removed from the school.
AFP Forensic Services are attending the scene today to gather any available evidence.
Superintendent Michael Chew said with school holidays just around the corner, it is timely for the general public to report suspicious activity on school grounds.
“We would urge the community to report behaviour such as vehicles on school grounds at odd hours, suspicious persons or groups loitering around schools and unexplained noises such as breaking glass, to police immediately on 131444,” Supt Chew said.
“Police will be maintaining a strong presence around schools during the holidays to ensure mindless criminal acts such as this one are not repeated.
“Property damage is a serious criminal offence that can attract heavy penalties including imprisonment; so the message is if you think it’s just the cost of a window or two, then think again,” Supt Chew said.
If anyone has information that can assist police with their investigation into the Hawker incident they are urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or via www.act.crimestoppers.com.au
