Police seek witnesses to suspicious bridge fire

ACT Policing is investigating a suspicious fire on Tharwa Bridge, Tharwa today (July 1).
Police arrived at the Tharwa Bridge a little after 6am this morning. The ACT Fire Brigade were already on the scene. A fire approximately 3 metres x 1 metre in size had been extinguished in the centre on the western side of the bridge. The fire had burnt right through the timber decking and exposed a large hole. It also caused considerable charring to a number of structural bearers.
Forensics and fire investigators were called to the scene to analysis the cause of the fire.
Tharwa Bridge is the oldest surviving bridge in the ACT and is currently under renovation.
Police would urge anyone who may have witnessed suspicious persons in the vicinity of Tharwa Bridge this morning to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or on-line via www.act.crimestoppers.com.au.
