RAPID deployment nets 45 unregistered vehicles
Thursday, 17 July 2008
ACT Policing’s deployment of its number plate recognition system RAPID (Recognition and Analysis of Plates IDentified) in the past two days around Canberra resulted in the detection of 45 unregistered vehicles and the identification of 26 defective vehicles.
ACT-P’s Traffic Operations used RAPID throughout Canberra in such diversified areas as Gungahlin Drive in Mitchell, William Slim Drive in Giralang and the Tuggeranong Parkway.
In two days (Tuesday, July 15, and Wednesday, July 16), 4070 vehicles were checked by the RAPID system. RAPID is now in regular use by Traffic Operations throughout the ACT.
The following results were noted:
· 45 unregistered vehicles detected;
· 16 uninsured vehicles detected;
· 31 persons found with licence issues (either suspended, inactive or unlicensed);
· 28 Traffic Infringement Notices issued;
· 26 defect notices issued (major and minor).
In addition, there were 1956 roadside random breath tests completed but no drivers or motorcycle riders recorded a positive reading.
Traffic Operations’ Acting Superintendent Peter Davis said that while the RBT outcome was excellent, he was disappointed at the number of people who drive unlicensed or who fail to address the issue of proper registration and third party insurance for their vehicles.
“What many people fail to realise is that driving whilst unlicensed or without registration and compulsory third party insurance is not only against the law but also exposes the driver or rider to the potential for significant civil litigation if they are involved in a collision in which property is damaged or people are hurt,” a/Supt Davis said.
