Traffic targeting results in 128 infringements

Specific locations in Canberra were targeted today (Tuesday, June 16) by ACT Policing’s Traffic Operations team and Road Traffic Authority vehicle inspectors, resulting in the issuing of 128 Traffic Infringement Notices and 27 vehicle defect notices.

A total of 329 vehicles were inspected during the targeted operation.

From around 8am today, police focussed primarily on errant driver behaviour at selected locations around Canberra including school zones in Deakin, Hackett, and Red Hill; speed restrictions at roadworks in Kaleen; and drivers disobeying road signs on Capital Hill, in Lyneham and in Conder. Police also focussed their attention on motorists illegally using the bicycle lane on Canberra Avenue near the NSW border.

Of the 27 vehicles issued with defect notices, two were deemed by vehicle inspectors to be in such poor condition that they were dangerous and had to be towed away. One vehicle had no brakes and the other had the steel belts showing on its bald tyres.

Eight drivers were summonsed for various matters and one was arrested for a high range drink-driving offence.

Police will continue with their targeted traffic operations at undisclosed locations around Canberra over the next two days.
