Major MDMA Seizure in Sydney
Friday, 03 May 2002
Scrutiny of air courier packages arriving from overseas has resulted in Customs officers seizing over 30 kg of MDMA (also known as ecstasy), the Minister for Justice and Customs, Senator Chris Ellison, said today.
The drugs were discovered when Customs officers in Sydney x-rayed a consignment of three boxes - declared as containing CD-Roms - from the Netherlands.
"Because the x-ray showed up inconsistencies in the contents, the boxes were inspected and a large quantity of tablets were discovered. A subsequent ionscan particle analysis examination gave a positive reaction to MDMA," Senator Ellison said.
While the final weight and purity of the drugs have still to be confirmed, the seizure of 108,000 tablets could have a potential street value in Sydney of at least $5 million.
"This latest detection demonstrates the effectiveness of Customs improved screening of goods entering Australia and is further proof of the Federal Government's commitment to protecting Australia's borders against prohibited and harmful imports," Senator Ellison said.
"MDMA has been identified as the most significant and potentially threatening illicit drug in Australia and law enforcement authorities remain vigilant to prevent this and other dangerous substances from entering this country."
The Australian Federal Police are continuing investigations into the illicit drug importation.
