National media release

Friday, 26 December 2008
This is a joint AFP and Customs media release.
A 45-year-old Spanish national will face Parramatta Local Court today after being charged for importing approximately two kilograms of methamphetamine (Ice) concealed in the base of the man’s suitcase.
The man arrived at Sydney International Airport on a flight from Malaysia yesterday (25 December).
Customs officers conducted a search of the man's luggage and an x-ray revealed anomalies consistent with a possible narcotic concealment.
Presumptive testing of the substance indicated the presence of narcotics.
The matter was referred to the Australian Federal Police (AFP). Further examination of the suitcase revealed approximately 2kg of methamphetamine which has a potential street value of $800,000.
The substance is currently undergoing forensic testing to determine its exact weight and purity.
The AFP charged the man with importing a commercial quantity of a border controlled drug, contrary to Section 307.1 of the Criminal Code Act 1995.
The maximum penalty for this offence is life imprisonment and/or a $825,000 fine.
