AFP embraces Earth Hour

Friday, 28 March 2008

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) will tomorrow switch off lights, computers and electronic equipment in AFP buildings across Australia for Earth Hour.

AFP Commissioner Mick Keelty said the AFP was pleased to be part of Earth Hour, a global initiative, which aims to raise awareness of global warming.

“Although we are a 24-hour organisation, we are still able to play our part and join homes, businesses and government agencies across the world in raising awareness of environmental issues,” Commissioner Keelty said

“Non-essential electronic devices across the AFP will be switched off from 8pm to 9pm, but essential policing functions will still be maintained throughout the period.”

The AFP’s participation in Earth Hour follows a number of environmental initiatives including the increased procurement of fuel efficient and low emission vehicles, the installation of water saving shower heads and the use of recycled paper.

A recent example of the AFP’s commitment to the environment can be seen in the new AFP Canine Kennelling and Training Facility which incorporates waterless urinals and rainwater harvesting, energy efficient in-slab heating, solar hot water and the segregation of waste into recycling, organic and landfill.

“The AFP is committed to being an environmentally responsible member of the global community,” Commissioner Keelty added.
