Melbourne man arrested over child exploitation

Tuesday, 26 August 2008

A 49-year-old Croydon man appeared in Melbourne Magistrates Court this afternoon after being charged by the Australian Federal Police (AFP) with child exploitation offences.

The investigation began when the AFP received a referral from the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children based in the Unites States.

The AFP Child Protection Operations Team (CPOT) executed a search warrant on the man’s residential address where a computer, computer disks and scrap books allegedly containing child abuse images were located and seized.

AFP agents charged the man with using a carriage service to access child pornography material contrary to Section 474.19(1) of the Criminal Code Act 1995 and possessing child pornography contrary to Section 70(1) of the Crimes Act (Vic) 1958.

The maximum penalty for this offence is 10 years imprisonment.

The man was bailed to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on 16 January 2009.
