Sydney man arrested for people smuggling offences

A 35-year-old Pendle Hill man will face Sydney Central Local Court today after being arrested by the Australian Federal Police (AFP) for allegedly facilitating people smuggling activities.
Police will allege in court that the man was involved in facilitating the entry of a number of unlawful non citizens into Australia.
It will be alleged the man aided persons arriving on a venture which was intercepted by the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service – Border Protection Command near Christmas Island on 28 June 2009.
The man has been charged with organising or facilitating the bringing into Australia of five or more persons, who are unlawful non citizens, contrary to section 232A of the Migration Act 1958.
This offence carries a maximum penalty of 20 years imprisonment.
