Woman arrested for amphetamine importation
Sunday, 07 June 2009
A 24-year-old woman will face Parramatta Local Court today charged with importing approximately 1000 tablets of amphetamine into Australia.
Customs and Border Protection officers at Sydney International Airport stopped the Australian woman and searched her baggage after she arrived on a flight from Lebanon yesterday (Saturday 06 June).
It will be alleged in court today that inside the woman’s luggage, officers found a number of plastic containers with approximately 1000 tablets inside clip-seal sleeves.
Presumptive testing of one of the tablets indicated a positive result for amphetamine.
Further forensic testing will confirm the exact weight and purity of the substance.
The matter was referred to the Australian Federal Police and the woman was charged with importing a marketable quantity of a border-controlled drug contrary to section 307.2 of the Criminal Code Act 1995.
The maximum penalty for this offence is 25 years imprisonment and/or a $550,000 fine.Media enquiries:
