About ABDC services

The Australian Bomb Data Centre (ABDC) provides a range of services for:

  • participating government agencies; and
  • business and commercial organisations.

Services for government agencies

Services are provided for participating agencies:

  • Federal, State and Territory Police Services;
  • Australian Defence Force;
  • Australian Government security organisations; and
  • International Bomb Data Centres and police agencies.

Explosive Technical Intelligence and Response

  • National repository for data relating to incidents involving improvised explosive/incendiary devices (IEDs), and the theft and recovery of commercial and military explosives.
  • Continuous liaison with national and international agencies to facilitate the exchange of information.
  • Technical exploitation and analysis of improvised explosive devices (which may include the services of the Defence Science and Technology Organisation and Police Forensic Laboratories);
  • Technical assistance to investigators and forensic examiners through the maintenance of reference material concerning improvised explosive devices, explosives and accessories.
  • 24 hour inquiry response service providing technical and non technical information to participants.

Training and reference

  • Training assistance, including the design and conduct of short term training courses for participants. These courses address bomb threat procedures, search techniques, and explosive device awareness for UN contingents.
  • Reference manual 'Bombs: Defusing the Threat'. The handbook incorporates mail bomb countermeasures that complement Australian Standard AS 3745, Emergency Control Organisation and Procedures for Buildings.

Advice and reports

  • The majority of ABDC information bulletins and reports are restricted to police, military and intelligence agencies.
  • The ABDC Annual Statistics Report is available to the general public, and is published between April and May for the previous calendar year. This report provides statistical information on a range of bomb-related activities within Australia, including a 10 year graphical overview.

Services for commercial organisations

Bomb safety
  • The ABDC Bomb safety awareness kit is intended for use by security managers as part of an organisation’s 'Emergency Control Organisation' (ECO) issues.
  • The kit aims to provide management with a background on which to formulate in-house policy and to develop strategies to counter this threat.
