Interview gateway

Following the Supervised Testing & Awareness session, applicants deemed suitable to progress may be invited to attend an interview.

In most cases, interviews will be held in Canberra and dependent on operational and organisational priorities, there may be an option for phone interviews. Each interview will be conducted with a panel, generally with sworn and unsworn members of the AFP.

It is important that applicants are aware that when applying for Entry Level Recruit roles, they are being assessed against key selection criteria, and being assessed for roles within;

  • ACT Policing - as ACT Community Police
  • Protection - as Protective Service Officers and
  • National – as National Investigators.

What are we looking for?

We are looking for highly motivated people who can demonstrate their own experience, skills and abilities against each of the selection criteria, including:

  • self-management
  • communication
  • teamwork
  • leadership
  • integrity
  • diversity awareness.

Using the above selection criteria as a guide, applicants will be presented with specific, realistic scenarios and behavioural questions to respond to throughout the interview.

Preparation is essential

The interview is your opportunity to show why you are the best person for the job, so be prepared.

As with any job interview, applicants are encouraged to understand the role they are applying for and that of the broader AFP in Australia and internationally, and are encouraged to read through the AFP and ACT Policing websites.

Where possible, think about specific examples that will demonstrate your skills and qualities, and list practical examples against each of the above selection criteria.

Following interviews, applicants will be rated for their suitability for Entry Level Recruit roles within the AFP based on a holistic view of all mandatory gateways and performance at interview.  It is important to note that Entry Level Recruit processes are extremely competitive, often with a large number of applicants being assessed for a small number of positions on a recruit course.

Due to the volume of applications and the competitive nature of bulk recruitment processes, following the interview gateway if you are deemed not as competitive at this gateway, feedback will not be provided.
