24-year-old man to face court over alleged child exploitation charges

A 24 year-old Somerville man will face court this week after being charged by Victorian Joint Anti-Child Exploitation Team (JACET) officers for alleged child exploitation.

On Saturday, 24 March 2018, officers from the Victorian JACET, comprising the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and Victoria Police, arrested the man and conducted a search warrant at his Somerville home, seizing a number of items.

Police will allege that the man used a number of media platforms to transmit and receive child exploitation material.  The man has been charged with:

  • Possession of child pornography contrary to s51G(1) Crimes Act (Vic);
  • Causing material to be transmitted to himself using a carriage service, the material being child pornography material contrary to section 474.19(1)(a)(ii) of the Criminal Code (Cth); and
  • Causing material to be transmitted to himself using a carriage service, the material being child pornography material contrary to section 474.19(1)(a)(ii) of the Criminal Code (Cth)

The man was remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear before the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday, 29 March 2018.

The maximum penalty for theses offences is 15 years imprisonment.
