Joint Counter Terrorism Team charge man and woman with planning a terrorist attack

This is a joint media release between the Australian Federal Police and the New South Wales Police Force.

The NSW Joint Counter Terrorism Team will today (Wednesday 8 February 2017) charge a man and a woman with planning to carry out a terrorist act as part of the on-going investigation by Operation Chillon.

The pair, aged 19, will be charged with 'conspiracy to do an act, or acts in preparation for, or planning, a terrorist act or acts' when they face Central Local Court today.

They have been in custody since being arrested early last year. At that time the man was charged with three counts of collecting documents likely to facilitate terrorist acts, while the woman was charged with recklessly possess a thing connected to a terrorist act and recklessly collect documents connected to a terrorist act.

Today's charges follow an extensive investigation by officers from the NSW Joint Counter Terrorism Team and on-going consultation with the Commonwealth DPP. The charge carries a penalty of life imprisonment.

The pair will face Central Local Court today (Wednesday 8 February).
