Queens Birthday Honours for two AFP members

Australian Federal Police (AFP) Commissioner Andrew Colvin APM has today congratulated two officers awarded the Australian Police Medal for their invaluable commitment to law enforcement and a dedication to needs of the broader organisation.

Detective Sergeant Michael Turner began duties with the AFP as a Protective Service Officer (PSO) in 1981 and was quickly drawn to police service in 1982.

In 1997 he gained detective status and his interests then turned to internal investigations with the AFP Professional Standards Team.  He subsequently has worked in the AFP Brisbane office and was deployed to Papua New Guinea in 2004.

In 2005 he joined Head Office Investigations (HOI) bringing with him a wealth of operational and administrative experience.

Sergeant Sharon Slater joined the AFP in April 1983. She began duties with ACT Policing working in General Duties, and then over the next 20 years also worked in the Sexual Assault Unit, the Criminal Investigation Branch and the Drug Squad.

Sgt Slater achieved the rank of Sergeant in 2006 and under her stewardship the Volunteers in Policing Program has developed into one of the most successful and respected police volunteer programs in the country.  In 2014 she was awarded the ACT Community Protection Medal by the ACT Government for her outstanding leadership, commitment and personal drive for the program.

Commissioner Colvin praised both officers for their outstanding contribution to the agency over a sustained period, during which time it has undergone considerable change and growth.

“Det-Sgt Turner has demonstrated exceptional expertise, diplomacy and insight in his ability to undertake such critical investigations. He has also made a significant contribution to his colleagues through his expertise and knowledge sharing,” Commissioner Colvin said.

“Sergeant Slater has been a mentor and coach to many members of ACT Policing during her lengthy service, and has excelled in the implementation of the Volunteers in Policing Program, which continues to add value to the AFP's ability to meet operational outcomes and business needs.”

“I would like to sincerely thank Mick and Sharon for their enduring dedication to policing and the community.”
