Expressions of Interest - AFP SHIELD Advisory Group

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) seeks expressions of interest from individuals and organisations to join the SHIELD Advisory Group.

Expertise are being sought from a variety of fields including clinical services, non-clinical services, allied health, universities, health administration, and healthcare facility services.

The nature of the work undertaken by frontline responders carries an inherent risk of psychological and physical harm and/or injury. This has created a challenge for policing and frontline responder organisations around the world, particularly as there is a growing community expectation that more must be done to better protect those who serve us. In order to effectively protect the Australian community and combat crime, the AFP must ensure the health, safety and preparedness of its sworn and unsworn staff, both now and into the future. This has led to the single, largest health and wellbeing investment in the AFP’s history - SHIELD.

SHIELD embeds evidence based health and wellbeing services into the day-to-day operations of AFP members, former members, Reservists and their families by focusing on regional service provision and a risk-based approach. SHIELD establishes health and wellbeing capability aligned to specific needs of each regional and Canberra Command. It will include dedicated teams of clinical resources focused on building trust with staff, early intervention, preventing injuries and improving operational performance.

SHIELD will include a Centre of Excellence that will provide an enhanced focus on operational performance and a dedicated research function focussed on providing an evidence base for health and wellbeing services for frontline responders.  It will produce research and insights to guide the health and wellbeing services delivered through SHIELD.

The Advisory Group will convene as required (likely quarterly and virtually) to provide expert strategic advice and guidance on the development and implementation of SHIELD to ensure the delivery of best practice physical and psychological prevention, early intervention and treatment models.  SHIELD is designed to support high performing operational teams and members/organisations that form the Advisory Group will be expected to have contemporary knowledge in evidence based models of care for this cohort.

SHIELD services will be tailored to support a whole of life-cycle model, including face-to-face service delivery and telehealth.  Members of the Advisory Group will have the opportunity to contribute to the development of SHIELD, a brand new health capability that directly supports the frontline.

Expressions of Interest should be no longer than two pages and submitted by 11:59pm AEDST, 4 November 2020.

Appointment to the SHIELD Advisory Group is at the AFP’s sole discretion and may be subject to an AFP Organisational Suitability Assessment.
