People Smuggling Domestic Reward Scheme - Up to $200000 may be paid for information or evidence

On Sunday 21 July 2013, the Australian Government announced the Maritime People Smuggling Domestic Rewards Scheme, to be administered by the Australian Federal Police. Rewards of up to $200,000 may be paid to persons who provide relevant information or evidence that results in:

  • arrest(s)
  • convictions
  • seizure(s)
  • provision of significant intelligence
  • assistance in operational capacity.

The Maritime People Smuggling Domestic Rewards Scheme is only relevant to information provided regarding maritime people smuggling ventures. Payments made to individuals will be assessed in accordance with the AFP rewards systems. Rewards paid by the AFP are subject to assessments to ensure that amounts are transparent, comparative, equitable and fair.

People smuggling is an offence under Section 233 of the Migration Act 1958. It involves the organisation or facilitation of the bringing or coming to Australia of a non-citizen who has no lawful right to come to Australia.
