$70,000 cash seized in suitcase at Brisbane Airport

A 28-year-old Sydney man been charged with a proceeds of crime offence, after more than $70,000 in cash was discovered inside a suitcase at Brisbane Airport at the weekend.

AFP Brisbane Airport members were called on Saturday evening (24 April 2021) after airport staff located a checked suitcase allegedly containing a large amount of Australian currency.

Police allege the suitcase contained approximately $70,000 in cash, comprising of $20 dollar and $50 dollar bank notes stored inside a vacuum sealed bag.

It will also be alleged in court that cloves of garlic were stored alongside the money in an attempt to conceal the currency and prevent detection by authorities.

Police identified the owner of the bag waiting to board a flight to Sydney.

The man was arrested and charged with dealing with money or property suspected of being proceeds of crime, contrary to 400.9 of the Criminal Code Act 1995 (Cth).

He faced the Brisbane Magistrates’ Court on Monday (26 April, 2021) and was bailed to face court again at later date.
