Man charged over alleged visa breach

A Sudanese-born man is expected to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court this evening (15 January, 2024) for allegedly failing to complying with his visa mandated curfew.

The AFP arrested and charged the man, 37, on Monday 15 January, 2024, after locating him in Melbourne’s CBD.

It will be alleged the man breached the conditions of his Commonwealth visa on 12 January, 2024, by failing to observe his residential curfew obligations.

The man has been charged with one count of failing to comply with a curfew condition, contrary to section 76C(1) of the Migration Act 1958 (Cth).

This offence carries a maximum penalty of five years’ imprisonment and a $93,900 fine.
