Man charged over alleged visa breach

A Sudan-born man, 24, is expected to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court today (26 January, 2024) for allegedly failing to comply with his visa conditions.

The AFP arrested and charged the man, an Eritrean citizen, on Thursday (25 January, 2024), after locating him in Brisbane.

It will be alleged the man breached the conditions of his Commonwealth visa by failing to observe his curfew obligations.

The man has been charged with two counts of failing to comply with a curfew condition, contrary to section 76C(1) of the Migration Act 1958 (Cth).

This offence carries a maximum penalty of five years’ imprisonment and a $93,900 fine.
