The AFP swore in 26 new recruits at a graduation ceremony held at Government House in Canberra today.

The 13 men and 13 women – aged between 20 and 36 – are the first recruit course to graduate from the AFP College this year.

New Constables will be deployed to stations across the ACT in general duties roles, supporting the officers working in the Canberra community and one Constable will be deployed to the AFP’s Southern Command.

Commander Learning and Career Development Allison Buck said the new Constables would be a welcome addition to the AFP workforce and would hit the ground running.

“Our newest officers are going straight into work ensuring the safety of our community, putting months of studying and training into practice,” Commander Buck said.

“They’ll be calling on their time at the AFP College to help deal with new situations, as well as their past study and work experiences, which is important for a well-rounded and representative police force.

“This is also the first time we’ve had a recruit course graduate at Government House and we’re very grateful to His Excellency General the Honourable David Hurley for extending the invitation to us.”

Among the group of new graduates are former Australian Defence Force soldiers, investigators from the Australian Border Force, police officers from New South Wales and Victoria, and former prison officers.

New AFP Constable Emma Waye said she was excited to join the force and honour a family legacy of serving the Australian community.

“My parents and Poppa were police officers in South Australia, so I've grown up with policing stories, and it's made me really excited to get out there and give back to the community,” she said.

Serving the community is a sentiment shared by Constable Jaxon Tennent who worked as a lifeguard before applying to join the AFP.

"I always knew I wanted to work in the emergency services, but I wasn't sure of the exact path until a few years ago. The breadth of work you can experience in community policing really excites me and I'm looking forward to hitting the streets."
